No sign of him doing anything, or even acknowledging my complaints, so far.

My guess is that, like a typical ‘droid, he’ll react to the ISP address and go with that.

It isn't another reason for registration. It is repetition of the same reason.
Anybody can be anybody, and a few malicious characters are.

People who use certain types of proxies can make the IP show anything they want. Obviously, someone DID.

One thing about registration is that it couldn't care less what your IP is. It only cares that you have the right password for the account. IOW, it cannot be spoofed.

I would be thrilled with registration. I doubt we'd lose many members (heck, we're small anywho), but people wouldn't be able to hide behind sock puppets.
Right now, as you know, my power remains limited.

Who argues against registration?
Mostly those whose misconduct demands it in the first place.
Registration provides accountability. It won't stop abuse. But it makes abuse manageable.

Of course. In a board with registration, everyone can discuss issues with everyone.

In a DNRd board, many folks literally cannot even address a post by someone who has manipulated the system against them.

The superiority of registration is obvious.

That thread basically became an instant cesspit (and I feel sorry for Christopher, who started it). The post to which CE0802's nasty reply was made was one in which "Okie Dokie" called him a liar. Which was itself a response to people of opposite opinions being "lazy and stupid." *sigh*

Can you give more details on how this is possible? I realize it's possible for people to hide their IP behind a proxy, but I can not find any evidence that people can post on an internet forum using an IP that belongs to another computer.

All that is necessary is that it LOOKS like it came from a particular IP. Below is how it can be done if someone is so inclined.

Your first link describes a VPN. A VPN has an IP address. If someone posts from a VPN, the VPN address will show up in their posts.

How is it possible for someone to post using an IP address of another poster?

I didn't misunderstand. A VPN can accept any IP you request it to. The VPN hides your own IP address and substitutes another one, randomly or deliberately. So someone can APPEAR to be at a certain IP address, but obviously not be. Thus, someone who knows a particular static IP of someone else, they can plug it on to some VPNs to look like it is someone other than who it is.

The better they are at it, the more relays it can go through before finding them. In some cases, you simply cannot find their real IP.

Greenman has never denied posting something he posted. He can get ornery about it, insisting it was acceptable or deserved, but I've NEVER seen him lie about it. He is certain that it wasn't him, especially since he wasn't online when certain posts landed, but was asleep.

I believe him because, while he can sometimes be difficult, I've never known him to be a LIAR.
