With the exception of "The Back Alley", CIVIL DISCUSSION IS EXPECTED
Offline

Who remembers sites specifically set up for this? Before Xitter, Meta apps, etc.
When the dial-up wars, The OS wars, and the browser wars began?
SPAM was no longer a food and ironically Do Not Feed The Troll became a mantra.
Anonymity was an illusion and Piracy became virtual and digital.
Adding HTML to your post was the rage.
Crazy times. But not much has changed and now were used to it. Desensitized somewhat to think its normal to encounter or contribute inflammatory remarks in every comment section and broadcast it globally. Even kitten/puppy videos on youtube lol. But seriously people have more empathy for a rat stealing a slice of pizza from the garbage than a human in a crisis. It's sad.
I'll admit that in the early days of this stuff at the turn of the century I poked and prodded in inflammatory ways on those flaming forums, then it evolved to fighting trolls on message boards set up for civil social community. Soon many of those forums grew into rival and trollish groups and commonplace like we are accustomed now. In the beginning it was fun and funny, mostly harmless but it didn't take long to go sour. In the end, 'the enemy of my enemy is not my friend', is not a thing to be easily dismissed. Uniting for a common disagreement is not a solid foundation for a lasting common goal. After learning some disturbing things about several of them I stopped being an ally to the enemy of my enemy who was harboring the enemy all along.
Regrettably I know my shortsightedness contributed to helping others be worse trolls to others, and that I never intended. Shortly after I stopped being social online for a long time after that and no longer sharing 'workarounds' with strangers. Social platforms evolved and I reintegrated slowly for real life friends and family. After a while I found myself reminiscing and nostalgic for some of the old school boards with civil people. Eventually I found myself looking here at an eclectic group of people that I would have in my real life friends and acquaintances. It also seems some of you are encountering trollish people at boardhost that resemble so many others in my past. I worry that a lifetime ago I contributed to that by giving gas to arsonists to make molotov cocktails for ruining your experiences. I can't be certain but If so, I'm sorry.
Yet at the same time like I said y'all know what you are getting into nowadays. If you must, Satire and Parody are better than personal insult if you engage a troll. An insult is like a compliment but satire is a lasting irritant.

As you may have guessed, those of us here don't want flame wars of any kind to be the norm on our 2 "home boards". We require civil discussions. Naturally, people will disagree, but there's no excuse for being disagreeable about it. When anyone is, we tend to apologize after we simmer down.
Here, on Boardhost we have the luxury of unlimited blocks on IPs and the ability to require registration to keep the trolls OUT. Something we didn't have on Webapps, TBQ, MSNBC, and other platforms prior to moving here.
When I was creating this forum, I added in the Back Alley for a specific reason. On other platforms where I ran boards, I realized that people do get angry during heated discussions so sometimes they needed an outlet where those not involved didn't have to see it play out. I didn't moderate the back alleys because it was kept off the main board where it didn't belong so I saw no reason to ban anyone for getting ugly where it was allowed and all who entered knew the score if they did.
Those of us registered on both Blue boards prefer civility in our discussions. However, there little to nothing that we can do about the "sister boards" where trolls run free and where we all also used to post pretty regularly with the groups there.
Trolls & rabblerousers have always existed anywhere that people gather. Some folks just like fist fights and savage brawl, especially where they feel anonymous and safe from harm. The problem is when some of them take things to real life to harm strangers who are mere blips on a screen to them. THAT goes way too far. As you may have guessed, we have too many of THAT type hanging around on the other boards who still hate us. Personally, I have no desire whatsoever to engage them or even see their "names". It's just amusing sometimes to guess which of the sock puppets are them.
With the influx of "new blood" from other forums we never engaged with, it's not always as obvious as it used to be who is playing extra characters. But truth is, it's really not very important.

Thanks for the response. I understand the need for moderated spaces.
If there's a misunderstanding about my presence and post I wasn't intending on starting flame wars with anyone. I brought it up as a topic of discussion. I have no intentions on starting conflict with anyone here.
I see the frustrations. I was trying to relate. It seems I did a poor job of that.
I'm not the same angry misguided person I was back then. I agree it goes too far too often. At first I believed I was just trying to annoy the annoying people stirring things up. Unintentionally I helped others hurt innocent people to a greater degree. Once I saw the level of deceipt from 'friends' I stopped helping. Unfortunately I can never undo what happened.
My apologies to everyone if I've upset you by bringing it up.

I'm not upset about you bringing it up. It is reality. Some people live for the battles. I used to indulge when the mood struck me and enjoyed teasing the animals. Once it left the cyberworld and infected real life, I put an end to my participation in it.

I used to be very intrigued by the mythical creatures who sometimes show up.
It turns out most are just Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales, some masquerade as other fabled creatures, some even aim to deify themselves. Historically it usually boils down to control and power with these mysterious beings.
Occasionally a real rare species rears it head that doesn't adhere to conventional or traditional understandings.
I think Darwin would be fascinated by such creatures. I try to reign in my level of enthusiasm to find out more with varied degrees of success.

I already know the name and real life of my major tormenter. I can't share that info though. In spite of the terrible things he's done and continues to do, I do NOT expose ANYONE to others. It's just wrong on every level.

I'm sorry. That's too bad you have to deal with something like that. I would never expect anyone to reveal anything like that either. That would just create more trouble. It's also very wrong like you said.
For myself I wouldn't hesitate to report it to law enforcement if they crossed into my personal life to escalate and persist in their attacks.
My point I was making was that I might look into their online presence in all forms just in case for information not to return the harassment if it got that bad.

Oh that was done. I wouldn't let anyone get away with real life harm to me or my loved ones.
I meant not expose someone to other posters. Well, unless they were also injured by the same person, like one other in our group was. Everyone else has no right to know real life deets on anyone else, especially if there's bad blood there too.
I neglected to mention that someone else invaded my real life long ago and threatened my children. I moved to another state to get away from them and let police handle it.
