New poll shows Joe Biden surging in Democratic field

by Mark Moore April 30, 2019 | 4:45PM

Joe Biden is surging among Democratic presidential contenders with 38 percent of the vote – and 56 percent of Democrat-leaning voters believe he has the best shot of beating President Trump in the 2020 election, according to a national poll released Tuesday.

Biden, who entered the race last week and held his first campaign rally in Pittsburgh on Monday, is outpacing Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s 12 percent, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 11 percent and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s 10 percent, the Quinnipiac University poll showed.

Following were Sen. Kamala Harris of California with 8 percent and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke with 5 percent.

None of the other Democratic nominees got more than 2 percent in the poll.

A Quinnipiac poll from March 28 showed Biden at 29 percent, Sanders with 19 percent and O’Rourke at 12 percent.

Along with a majority believing he has the best shot to unseat Trump, 44 percent said Biden would be the best leader and 23 percent think he has the best policy ideas.

Among Democrats, 25 percent are looking for a presidential candidate who will focus on battling Trump, while 70 percent want the candidate to focus on national issues.

Joe Biden to join packed 2020 Democratic field as favorite

Joe Biden will join a growing pack of fellow Democrats... “The Democratic primary race suddenly gets real with a fast start by former Vice President Joe Biden and a very clear indication from voters that he is the only candidate who can send President Trump packing 18 months from now,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll.

The survey found 84 percent of Republicans want Trump to get the GOP presidential nomination.

But 52 percent of all voters said they definitely will not vote for Trump is he’s the nominee, while 33 percent said definitely will and 13 percent said they would consider it.

The poll surveyed 1,044 voters nationwide between April 26-29. It has a plus/minus 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
