I tried as gently and diplomatically as possible to get him to tone back his contempt. His response was to increase it. Every time Merlin posted anything, he was first to disparage it. He was pursued by a cloud of flies; people he alienated over the years who appear to derive some pleasure from pursuit of him. They had good reason. He trashed them all to the point where there was no hope of any kind of respect or camaraderie. Rather than take my suggestion to re evaluate his contempt for and disparagement of SJW, he went the other way. He became desperate to find out who SJW is. If he knew, would he be embarrassed?

Schermerhorn is a fine hall. An elegant old building with a rich history. What purpose is there from posting pictures of it with intent to weaponize? Doesn't reflect what a great place it is. What a fine orchestra the Nashville Symphony is. Yes, they're good.  It's a lovely old hall. No question. But use of that with intent to contempt or disparage somebody else on of all places, a message board, and suggest they haven't really arrived until they perform there is ignorant and abusive. That isn't what most patrons of the Nashville performing arts do, and I'm certain many would find that abuse appalling. 

Then there is the name calling, as if that's a sign of superior intellect and creativity. Schizosia? Greenworm? What adults do that? Trump does, and it endears him only to a base equally lacking in ethical, moral humanity. Pretty much the same as those who post on CPD. There is nothing funny, or clever about it. Most people see that for exactly what it is. Coming from an adolescent, it is evidence for need for correction. From any adult, and in his case an old man, it is a warning to reasonable people, something is seriously wrong with this person. What ever are their deficiencies is not our responsibility, and at his age, I am uncertain any kind of counsel or therapy would be effective. 

All he had to do was scale his contempt back and dial it down. Resist posting disparagements and the other abuses Ken listed in the suspension post. Instead he stept it up and made it worse. Rather than engage me in fruitful discussion that could have grown friendship, he ignored me in preference for doing what he did. People do what they want. 

I am sad this happened. I really wanted it to work out. But I will not and cannot make a choice between him and you all. If by association he thinks I am compromised, he is mistaken. A friend would not put another friend in a position forced to make such an unacceptable choice. 

That said, I still commend him for making the effort to bridge differences and ignite a friendship. I still have hope it could happen. It's like learning a piece the wrong way, then correcting it. You have to really fight NOT to slip back into the old habits and revert to the mistaken way you were. I believe that's what happened here. I hope that's what happened here.

Pikes, every time I read one of your posts I remember that you must be one of the most patient people I have ever known. Even when things seem futile, you leave the lights on low, just in case.

I find it hard to comprehend the pleasure they get out of that.

I kind of agreed with ‘Gatekeeper’ about a) how DNFTT almost never works (can’t get complete buy-in) and b) that mocking trolls and frustrating them is about as effective, and more fun.

I used to do that a lot with GOG and jb, although the former was more fun because he’s a lot wittier.  There are a couple of other humorless types who could use some mockery, too.

The really nasty ones deserve shutting down, though.
