Paris' Notre Dame cathedral burns in major fire Paris officials said on Monday that the Notre Dame cathedral was affected by a massive fire; video footage showed the spire and rooftop of the historic cathedral engulfed in flames. Police reportedly said the fire was started by accident, related to ongoing work on the building. The Catholic cathedral was built in the 12th century and is a renowned example of French Gothic architecture. The church has been undergoing an intense restoration process, with sixteen bronze statues of saints removed for cleaning just a few days ago. Its spire, which seems to be at the center of the flames, was in the midst of a $12.4-million revitalization

The roof of the cathedral also collapsed into the church as those on the scene observed in horror.
The fire at the 800-year old cathedral began at about 6:50 local time, ABC News reports. The building had been in the midst of renovations. Firefighters are currently responding, and police say no deaths have been reported, per The Associated Press. A Notre Dame spokesperson said, "Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame."

Too soon to say, but I think structural damage may be greater than anticipated.
Our glorious president immediately suggested France deploy aerial suppression,
which Macron said would have totally destroyed the church. Trump's suggestion is
like proposing brain surgery with a sledge hammer and chisel. He really should
shut up, since he doesn't offer condolences and clearly doesn't care anyway.

It appears that much of the cathedral was able to be saved, but so much lost in the fire. I have to wonder if the structure will be solid enough to rebuild it or need a ton of reinforcement.
