Housing Sec Ben Carson confuses 'REO' with 'Oreo' during congressional

Housing Secretary Ben Carson confuses 'REO' with 'Oreo' during congressional hearing
 3:45 p.m.

Faced with a question that used a simple real estate term, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson became confused — and appeared to believe he was actually being asked about cookies.

During a hearing before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, Carson was asked a question by Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) about REOs, which stands for real estate owned.

"Do you know what an REO is?" Porter asked. Carson responded, "An Oreo?"

Porter clarified that she was not, in fact, asking Carson a cookie-related question, but Carson still sounded unfamiliar with the term, thinking the last letter stood for "organization" after being pressed. The Washington Post's Drew Harwell observed that REO is "literally one of the first terms taught to new real-estate agents" and "one of the defining symbols of the housing crisis."

The term was something Porter found herself having to explain, though, telling Carson, "that's what happens when a property goes to foreclosure: we call it an REO." Watch the strange moment, which Porter herself shared on her Twitter account while expressing bewilderment, below.

Carson is Secretary of an industry with which he is wholly unfamiliar, and in which he had no training. In ways, he's a smart man. But not here, in this way, in the industry of housing and urban development. The scientific precisions of surgeons, and abstractions of HUD concepts, ideas, and policies are about as polar opposite in human thought one can find in the human experience.

Leave it to Trump, to whom virtually all scholarship is a mystery, to misunderstand appointment. Trump thinks and expects books to be written about him. He never had time to read books. He's much too important, and busy for that nonsense.

What I don't get is WHY Congress confirms them when they KNOW that they are clueless ????

Ben Carson is a brilliant surgeon.  WHY on earth would he accept an appointment to something SO foreign to him ???

Majority of Congress was Republican. So was Carson. That's all they need. All they need to know.
The moment they say they put country over party, they lie. So do Democrats, but not as badly, or blatantly.
Carson has some weird personal beliefs. For example, his belief the Egyptian Pyramids were the granaries built for the Joseph years of famine. Anyone is entitled to his beliefs. But he is not authorized to create policy based on his beliefs either. In Biblical history, Carson sounds like a crank, and if he's a crank there, he's likely a crank as HUD Sec'y. His surgery of cutting the HUD budget pleased Trump greatly, and neither has the slightest knowledge about, or concern for those dependent on the programs cut. In terms Carson might understand, it's like removal of brain in effort to save the tumor.

He accepted the position because he can get $8000 for a dishwasher for his office. And on, and on, and on.
He may be a brilliant surgeon (although at this point, I would demand some evidence), but every other context I've seen him in, he's been a moron. He's an idiot.

Republicans put him in the position because they are dealing with someone with a known price. He does what they want - or probably more accurately, he doesn't do what they don't want him to do. He slacks where they want him to slack.

Well, that makes sense.  It's still totally ridiculous and as irresponsible as imaginable...
